The Social Good Network

I know a lot of people who work in so-called “helping” professions. They give their time to those who need their help in exchange for emotional, rather than financial rewards. These are teachers, social workers, therapists, community organizers, and advocates. Sometimes their gifts of goodness make me feel bad because I look at what I do and think that there’s no way I’m helping to change anything in the world. (I suspect many people who work in offices feel this way from time to time.)

But I’ve actually come to consider how social media and the maintenance and development of social media networks link to changing the world. I stumbled upon the Project C website at ClickingCreatesChange. It’s an organization devoted to giving back to its community and that’s great but you need so many skilled individuals to build and run a website like that. The community beneath the community, as it were.  Take a look at Sparked, which has evolved since its inception, but still allows the social outsourcing of technical aptitude. Thriving on the goodness of the technical-minded has helped nonprofits to expand into social media as well. That’s not to say that they won’t demand a paycheck but there’s certainly room to offer services to varying industries. Not everything IT is dark rooms and social isolation. (There are, however, days when that would be perfectly nice.

My coding projects continue. I haven’t yet developed anything grandiose enough to save humanity but it’s nice to know that the option is available. Especially with the apps market being what it is.
